A long-standing employee of 17 years started to behave badly. He had always been a valued member of the team, but his short temper and lack of patience caused him to be accused of bullying by a female member of the team. As a result of the complaint he was passed over for promotion and this is really where the rot set in. He felt he was entitled to the promotion due to his length of service.
Disgruntled and feeling betrayed, he started sabotaging client relationships, abusing his fellow team members, working sporadically and to a much lower quality than he had in the past.
The client’s manager and the general manager of the organisation had all but given up on him and unless our approach worked, the next step was to let him go.
The client was located in Sydney and was already known to the WA Hub through another business contact. Because of the distance and the client’s history of intolerance with women, Arthur was assigned to the program.
Once the client had completed the questionnaire, Arthur flew to Sydney for the day to meet with the client’s manager, the client’s wife and the client himself, to deliver the report and the Insights all in one day. The organisation had only agreed to half the program (report debrief, Insights, 3 topics and a review) so the topics were delivered via Skype.
There was enough noticeable improvement after the first three topics that the organisation agreed to complete the program, albeit in a one-day super-session that Arthur flew to Sydney to conduct.
The client, after some initial reluctance, really threw himself into the program.
Since it was not delivered as a normal program, having the client re-sit the questionnaire after such a short space of time seemed inappropriate, so we diarised to touch base again some 3 months later.
Even before the client was given the go-ahead to re-sit the questionnaire the results were definitive.
Globally there was one promotional opportunity offered this year. Our client’s manager nominated him for that opportunity – a reflection of success in itself considering the option only 10 months earlier was to let him go. Six people from around the globe were nominated for the promotion and each was assessed on their merit and at an interview, which was conducted by a panel of 4 senior executives.
According to his manager, our client was the standout winner in all criteria and as a result, now holds the position of Director. What a remarkable turnaround!
